The Citrine Lantern

Amara was a florist known for creating arrangements that seemed to glow from within. Her shop was a sanctuary of colors and scents, a place where people came to celebrate, to grieve, or simply to pause. Yet despite surrounding herself with beauty, Amara often felt a shadow in her own heart—a quiet uncertainty that she could not arrange away.

One evening, as she closed the shop, a traveling artisan left a small package on her counter. Inside was a lantern-shaped pendant, carved from citrine. Its amber light seemed to pulse softly, like a captured sunbeam.

Amara held it up to the lamp. The artisan’s note read:
“This lantern is for anyone who lights the world for others but forgets to light themselves.”

She smiled faintly, feeling a warmth she hadn’t realized she had been missing. That night, she wore the pendant home, letting its gentle glow brush against her chest.

The next day, she noticed something different. As she arranged flowers, she wasn’t just thinking of shapes and colors—she thought of the joy they might bring. When a customer lingered, unsure which bouquet to choose, she stopped rushing, offering patience instead of speed. She laughed more easily. She listened more deeply.

A week later, a young girl entered the shop, fascinated by the citrine pendant around Amara’s neck.

“Why do you wear that?” the girl asked.

Amara knelt to meet her eyes. “Because sometimes, when you help others shine, you forget to let yourself glow.”

She touched the pendant lightly. “This reminds me to keep a little light for myself, too.”

That evening, Amara placed the lantern back on her dresser, not as decoration, but as a promise. From that day on, her light—soft, steady, real—began to reflect in everything she touched.

Moral: The kindness we give to others is brighter when we remember to nurture our own inner light.
